The Narrative Self

The Narrative Self

  • Ask your client to introduce themselves, in less than a minute, to a potential employer.
  • Ask your client to introduce themselves, in less than a minute, to a potential lover.
  • Ask your client to introduce themselves, in less than a minute, to a new elderly neighbour.
  • Ask them to compare these stories. Is any one of them more true than the others? What made them similar? What made them different?
  • Ask them to explore the difference between a “narrative” and the truth, as found in their words. Are they the same?
  • Can you, as the practitioner, guide them towards seeing that these are merely stories about ourselves, and as such, they are just contextually appropriate, temporary predictions?
