Direct Experience

  • Open one hand, flat. Press onto the palm with the thumb from the other hand.
  • Observe what do you notice?

Commentary: Sometimes, people are so used to thinking that they are unable to conceive of sensation as separate from thought. In this exercise we do something pointless in an attempt to confuse the mind. What do I experience? Pressure? My finger pushing into my palm? If the client says, “Yes it is X”, we can ask them, “does that name cover every aspect of it? Would someone know exactly what you have experienced hearing those words?
