- Ask your client to pick something in their experience.
- Ask them to give it a name (the actual name doesn’t matter, it is just
a handle for you to use to refer to it)
- Ask them who is observing this experience?
- Can they notice how there is someone/something observing the experience?
- Ask them is the observer the same, or different to the experience?
- Ask them: does the label applied to the experience also apply to the
observer?
- Ask them: which of these is “me”? The experience? The observer? Both?
- If they answer “both”, ask them “which of them is more me?”
Commentary: We are aiming for the client to become deeply aware that
experience and observer are different. Subject and object, as it were.
Understanding this is a foundation for the next set of exercises - as
we begin to step into questions of identity.
