Changing Attitude

  • Ask your client to pick up an object.
  • Now we tell them a little story about it - that it was responsible for something bad happening.
  • Then we ask them how that feels in their body.
  • Now we tell them a story about how it made something brilliant happen.
  • Again we ask them how they feel in their body.
  • Then we have them compare: typically they feel different. So the same object, yet a very different experience of it.

Commentary: This simple exercise demonstrates how the majority of our experience of something is down to our attitude to it and not inherent in the thing itself.

And, if this is the case with a simple object on one’s desk/etc, how might it be for things that actually matter in our lives?
