Putting the Negative in the Positive

Putting the Negative in the Positive

  • Close your eyes and bring to mind something about yourself that they would like to be different.
  • Notice how you feel when you bring this to mind.
  • Now, imagine a scenario where this is no longer the case. The issue is resolved, dealt with, never to happen again.
  • Check again in your body, how does this feel?
  • Does it feel small or large? Static, or expansive?
  • Sit with this, let it be there, let it grow inside your body.
  • Now, bring back the feelings from the original concern, and place them at the centre of this positive space.
  • Ask yourself, is this the same, or different to the original experience of the difficult feeling?

In some mysterious sense, we only need to imagine something going away to have the feelings we want.

Practice this daily, sitting down, with your eyes closed.

Then, as the experience, and the sensations of it become more familiar, see if you can replicate something of it in the midst of life.

Note, this can feel like lying. It isn’t. We aren’t changing the truth, we are just changing the emotional story, which is less concerned about conceptual truth or falsehood - it is much more about motivation.
